Craniosacral therapy (CST) began in the mid-1970s when an osteopath, John Upledger, began studying the rhythmic wave and fluid motion in the spinal cord that would sweep up and down within the membranes.

Craniosacral therapy utilizes light touch to examine the membrane and movement of the fluids in and around the central nervous system. When a practitioner is able to relieve the tension in the central nervous system, evidence shows there is a boost in immunity, a decrease in pain, and an overall increase in health and wellness.

When an individual undergoes an injury or experiences chronic illness this can lead to a “restriction” in the fascia. Fascia is a “connective tissue” that is found all throughout the body. Fascia can be found in organs, glands, nerves, tendons, ligaments, muscles, blood vessels, brain, and spinal cord. The facia is a covering that creates the interconnectedness of the entire body. CST believes that due to the connectivity of the body, gentle touch can be used to improve self-regulation of the body and healing.

When the fascia is restricted it cuts off circulation in body tissue, creates stress on the body, and impedes healing.

If you are struggling with chronic pain, illness, inflammation, or immobility in certain areas of your body, this therapeutic modality might be a great fit for you. Our bodies endure stress and tension that it is constantly working to repair. CST practitioners will evaluate the craniosacral system by using light touch to indicate parts of the body where cerebrospinal fluid may be creating pressure and help to release restriction in any tissue that may be contributing to discomfort, pain, and unhealed injury.
